THE family of the slain 82-year-old disabled granny from Kuruman, Northern Cape, who was allegedly raped and murdered at her home, say they want justice.

The grandmother, Kealebogo Moeng, was allegedly raped and murdered at her home in Cassel, outside Kuruman, on Friday at about 9pm after she refused to give the perpetrator money.

Her granddaughter, Mmalesa Moeng, says the family is still in shock at the way her grandmother died. She says it was heartbreaking to hear that the cause of her death was murder and not old age or ill-health.

“My grandmother suffered a stroke two years ago, leaving her unable to use the left side of her body. She could not walk without a walking stick and needed assistance to sit down or stand up. We assisted her with everything, as well as collecting her social grant,” Moeng said.

She said, her grandmother lived in a back room on her own (which she requested) while one of her grandchildren lived in the main house with his family. The grandchild said they did not hear any struggle or screams but found their grandmother naked on the floor later that evening.

The alleged perpetrator, who had apparently demanded cash from the granny, is thought to be a 16-year-old boy who lives nearby. When the boy could not get any money, he allegedly covered the 82-year-old’s mouth, raped her, and stabbed her numerous times with a screwdriver, the granddaughter alleged.

“We found my grandmother’s fridge empty. It seems when she refused to give the perpetrator money, he started taking groceries. Our village is a small community, and such crimes do not happen here. This was brutal and inhuman, especially to a woman of my grandmother’s age. She was stabbed everywhere in her body, even her eyes.”

Moeng said the mother of the 16-year-old was shocked after she heard what her son had allegedly done and could not think of a reason why he behaved in such a manner.

Kuruman SAPS Warrant officer, Mosimaneotsile Letsapa, confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and will appear in court soon.

Letsapa said, he could not share more information on the matter. The teenager has been charged with murder.
