SANDF’s new eco-warriors

Date: 12 Jun 2007
The SA National Defence Force’s application of environmental management has been extended to its foreign peacekeeping deployments. Lieutenant Renier van Wyk was the first SANDF environmental officer to be deployed as part of the Comoros mission last year. The lessons Van Wyk learnt there were added to Sgt Wally Botha’s checklist on his return from overseeing environmental considerations in Burundi. It is envisaged that any further SANDF deployments into Africa will have an environmental officer on the overall command team. Van Wyk also won the Department of Defence’s environmental services Award. AFB Langebaanweg won the water efficiency award, AFB Ysterplaat the energy efficiency award, SAS Saldanha the ecological management award, Simon’s Town Naval Base the environmental education award, AFB Overberg he integrated environmental management award, and Army Support Base Potchefstroom the waste management and best environmental management awards.
