He was allegedly defending himself against three robbers, but Sibusiso Dlamini spent the night behind bars and has been charged with murder.
The wheelchair-bound man, whose dad is a policeman, was attacked yesterday while driving through Zola 2, in Soweto.
One of the attackers allegedly pulled out a gun and pointed it at Dlamini (31) while the others searched him, looking for a licensed firearm they believed he was carrying.
But Dlamini refused to give up the gun tucked away inside a leg holster, and a struggle broke out.
Retrieving his weapon, Dlamini allegedly shot and killed an armed attacker, and his two accomplices then overpowered Dlamini and ran off with both guns.
Police spokesperson Captain Philemon Khorombi said Dlamini was arrested and charged because "someone is dead".
"The courts must decide whether it was self-defence," he said.
