Suspect admits rape, denies killings

Date: 22 Feb 2010
A man has denied killing an elderly couple but has allegedly admitted to raping the woman. Alice Botha, 71, was raped and died in her home in Northmead, Benoni, during the attack on the night of February 12. Her husband Jack, 75, died in hospital in Alberton on Wednesday. A 46-year-old man was arrested at the Chris Hani informal settlement on Friday and is due to appear in court this week. Police said the man's fingerprints were found at the scene of the crime. The suspect allegedly admitted to police that he raped Alice but denied the murders, blaming these on two accomplices. Two other suspects were also arrested, and the police are trying to determine whether they are linked to the crime. Benoni police spokesman Constable Godin Nyathi yesterday said the couple had endured a horrific ordeal. "They were attacked with sharp objects and had blood all over them. The house had been ransacked and was upside down," Nyathi said. Meanwhile, Sapa reports that an elderly couple were murdered in their home in Tinmyne in Limpopo on Friday after being severely assaulted with stones. Superintendent Ronel Otto said the suspects overpowered two workers at the couple's property, forced them into the house and tied them up. When the 70-year-old man and his 54-year-old wife returned from an outing, the attackers assaulted them with stones, killing them. They then ransacked the house and fled in the couple's Mercedes-Benz, which was later found burnt out about 20km from the house The police said the two workers managed to free themselves and walked to the nearest police station.
