Five men will appear in the Makwane Magistrate’s Court in Qwa-Qwa over the death of a police officer in Phuthaditjhaba at the weekend.
Superintendent Motarafi Ntepe said Inspector Matabane “Super” Mofokeng was walking with two women along a street on Saturday.
“A Colt bakkie with a KwaZulu-Natal registration number stopped next to them and six armed men got out and demanded the policeman’s firearm, money and cellphone,” Ntepe said.
When the policeman told them he did not have a firearm and cellphone, the robbers assaulted him.
“The woman then ran away and the robbers fired several shots at her but she was not hit,” Ntepe said.
Mofokeng arrived at his home and relatives took him to the Mofumahadi Manapo regional hospital in Phuthaditjhaba, where he died on arrival.
A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Police traced the suspects’ vehicle to Lusaka village, Makwane.
Five men aged between 23 and 27, from Sebokeng in the Vaal Triangle and Lusaka village were arrested.
A .38 special revolver was found and the men face murder and attempted murder charges.
