Heed warning as ATM attacks soar in Gauteng |
| Two hundred and fifty ATM bombings have been reported during the first half of this year - and the majority of the attacks are taking place in Gauteng. According to the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC), there have already been 250 ATM bombings reported this year - this is up by a staggering 60 cases when compared to the 190 reported cases in 2007. This figure has shown a sharp increase over the past four years with 54 reported cases in 2006 and just five reported in 2004. In light of the escalating cases of ATM bombings around the country, consumers are cautioned to be careful and alert when visiting an ATM. "Consumers must take heed of warnings to be extremely careful while using ATMs as they are increasingly becoming the targets of criminals," said Auto & General director Angelo Haggiyannes. "They (criminals) are known to target people at ATMs, attacking them as they walk away from the machine after withdrawing cash or spying over their shoulders to check bank balances and to steal PIN numbers. "They also employ various tactics to get their hands on bank cards, very often by card swapping or manipulating the ATMs," he said.
