Joy as Nigerians free SA hostage SA hostage freed in Nigeria
I'M free! I'm free!" These were the words of South African Nick Greyling after being rescued from kidnappers in Nigeria.
He phoned his wife Lorna in Joburg on Monday night to give her the good news.
The last time they had spoken was the day after he was kidnapped by uniformed Nigerians on March 1 when he called to give her his kidnappers' demands to pass on to his bosses at SuperSport, for whom he works as a sound engineer.
Greyling and two Nigerian colleagues - cameraman Alexander Effiong and commentator Bowie Attamah - were taken from a bus in Imo province, near the Oweri airport. They were returning to Lagos after covering a soccer match.
Effiong escaped after the attack.
Greyling and Attamah were freed on Monday after a combined effort by Nigerian police, the Nigerian and South African governments, and private security specialists hired by SuperSport.
M-Net spokeswoman Caroline Creasy said: "The details are still not clear, but yes, he was released. It was a big operation and he was handed over to Nigerian police."
Of Greyling's health and immediate plans, she said: "He's absolutely fine. He'll probably get back (to South Africa) on Wednesday."
