Be particularly cautious when using your bank cards this festive season, and beware of scam e-mails doing the rounds asking you to upgrade or confirm your bank account information.
That's the warning from police, banks and the South African Fraud Prevention Services (SAFPS) as many South Africans begin their holiday.
Yesterday, SAFPS chief executive Patrick Cunningham said that when paying for something, people should watch their credit cards. "Don't let it out of your sight, especially when you go to a restaurant. When the waiter brings your slip, do the transaction there at the table."
Cunningham warned that criminals were becoming more creative in their attempts to access people's confidential banking details.
"When you go to an ATM, have a look around you. If you're facing the screen, look at the area just above it and check that there is nothing sticking out, like a little camera. This is a tendency (criminals) are using to copy your (PIN) code," he said.
Cunningham also warned bank customers never to give their personal information in e-mails or over the phone. "Never do this. Find out if the person or business you're dealing with is legitimate," he said.
Jerome Hardenberg, a police superintendent at the Commercial Crime Unit, said banks would never ask clients to provide confidential information via e-mail. "This is called phishing, and fraudsters do it to gain access to your account. Don't be coerced into this."
