NaFTA - NATIONAL FIREARMS TRAINING ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA

The possession of a firearm does not imbue the owner with the skills at arms or safety awareness necessary to become a safe and competent individual. It is also an unfortunate truism that the skills of marksmanship, gun manners and safety are no longer handed from father to child as often as was the case in previous generations. The comparatively recent liberalisation of the firearms licensing procedures have led to individuals who have little background in firearm usage having access to weapons and it is to the credit of a large number of these individuals that they have sought out and obtained instruction via the Association.

It is against this background that a brief mention of the aims and objectives of NaFTA is necessary. These are effectively encapsulated in the Association's motto "In the interest of public safety" and it is around the effective, standardised instruction in all relevant aspects of the safe, responsible and effective car, use and handling of weapons that the various courses offered by the members of NaFTA have been structured. NaFTA supports the perpetuation of the right to own licensed firearms as well as the furtherance of the interests of the shooting sports, collection of firearms and ethical hunting.

The Association is a registered non-profit making body, whose membership is open, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political views, to firearms instructors who have qualified via the Association's own in-house training programme and who are required to comply with standardised syllabi and pricing structures. The membership is largely comprised of civilian enthusiasts but members include registered security practitioners and commercial range proprietors. This diversity of membership ensures a broad cross-section of knowledge which is shared by way of update lectures, workshops and newsletters and encompasses teaching techniques and advances in firearms and ancillary equipment. NaFTA runs an administrative office which is staffed on a full time basis and provides a link between the members, the public and the Association.

At present there are 185 paid-up members distributed throughout the provinces of South Africa who instruct and train the public. The courses offered are broken up by firearm type and are listed below:
  • Handgun - Orientation, Basic, Intermediate, Advanced
  • Rifle - Basic
  • Shotgun - Basic, Intermediate
The core content of these courses includes range and safety rules, care, cleaning and maintenance, legal aspects of ownership, possession and use, aiming, grip, stance, types and selection of weapons.

The intermediate and advanced courses build on the basic course's foundation and include fire and movement, multiple target engagement, scenario shoots, multiple shot placement, additional stances and the introduction of time limits. A number of members also run shooting clubs which serve as a base for social and shooting activities. Instructors are available to make presentations to interested groups and bodies and in the past presentations to schools have been particularly well received.

The orientation and basic handgun courses form the core of the instructional offerings and were designed and structured around the needs of individuals with little or no background in the handling and use of firearms. As introductory courses, the sequencing and emphasis of the courses has been proven to be easily understood whilst the practical aspects are carefully taught to ensure understanding and ability are built upon. The emphasis throughout is on safety in the home, care and storage and maintenance of weapons. Within the association these courses are regarded as a valid and valuable contribution to the welfare of communities at large.

NaFTA supports the continuation of the various shooting sports and includes in its membership, or has involvement with, a number of these, such as the South African Practical Shooting Association, the Metallic Silhouette Shooting bodies, clay pigeon enthusiasts and, where appropriate, encourages successful students to join bodies of this type and participate actively in the social aspects offered by the various disciplines.

Interested parties should contact the National Firearms Training Association's administration office in Edenvale who will give you more information and provide you with details of active Nafta members close to your place of work and residence, as well as the region in which you live. NaFTA is committed to providing a public service in the interests of competent firearm usage and high safety standards.

The Administration Office is open between 9am - 4pm Monday to Thursday, and 9am - 1pm on Friday.
