ASESA
ASSOCIATION OF SECURITY ENGINEERS OF SOUTH AFRICA

The Association of Security Engineers of South Africa was established in 1981. It is a non profit making organisation and its objectives and aims are as follows:

Qualification for Membership:
  1. Manufacturers of safes, strongroom doors and fire resistant record protection equipment, who have been awarded the SABS mark in terms of the relevant standardisation schemes, enjoy membership of this Association.
  2. The SABS, together with mark holding manufacturers and representative of consumer bodies, have laid down both design and performance specifications for safes, strongroom doors and fire resistant record protection equipment. These specifications require each manufacturer's product to be subjected to independent destructive by the SABS. The Bureau may also at any time require an SABS mark holder to submit any mark bearing product within its range for random inspection and testing. Mark holding manufacturers currently members of ASESA are:
  • Austen Safe Company (Pty) Ltd
  • Chubb Lock & Safe Company (Pty) Ltd
  • National Safe Company (Pty) Ltd
  • SA Safe Manufacturing cc
  • Mutual Security (Pty) Ltd
In restricting full membership to SABS mark holding manufacturers, the Association ensures that purchasers of members' products are guaranteed a definite and measurable level of protection. In the case of safe and strongroom doors, the SABS specification specify attack methods the tools that may be used as well as the time that the product is required to withstand simulated burglarious attack in the South African environment and is required by the local Insurance Industry. Standards for fire resistant equipment require that cabinets or fire resistant files by subjected to tests at specified temperatures for fixed time periods. SABS marks are awarded to products when after completion of the fire test, paper documents, computer media or micro film are retrieved intact and the information contained thereon, is fully usable.

Insofar as the upgrading of specifications are concerned, members of the Association, together with the SABS and representatives of user organisations meet to discuss and draft revisions. Association members meet regularly with the Insurer Surveyors' Association to review limits placed on the various categories of safes in terms of cash and valuable stored overnight. During 1996 an information booklet on safes was produced by ASESA giving recommendations for amounts of cash to be held in various grades of safes as approved by the Accident Underwriters Association and the SA Insurance Association. The booklet also contains chapters on safe history, full specifications of the SABS tests and other relevant information.

Apart from the major objective, namely the maintenance among members of a defined and specific standard relating to products produced, ASESA provides advice and assistance to all potential purchasers of physical security products. A further service is to provide safe users with technical information on safes currently in use, including an assessment of the quality of the product in relation to the current overnight cash limits and modern attack methods.

Maintenance and Service:
ASESA members are requested to maintain teams of factory trained service technicians available countrywide on a 24 hour basis. All such technicians have been security cleared and registered in terms of the Security Officers' Act, thereby ensuring the integrity and honesty of such personnel. Additionally, all ASESA members are members of the Locksmiths' Association of South Africa and subscribe to the creed of that Association.

ASESA strongly recommends that safe owners make use of security cleared ASESA technicians when requesting service or maintenance of safes and strongroom/vault doors.

Associate membership available for bona-fide non-SABS manufacturers and other interested parties who have a direct interest in the physical security industry.
